Top Materials to Avoid Using in Your Kitchen Renovation

When planning your kitchen remodeling project, it’s important to ensure you are incorporating materials that will withstand the wear and tear of daily use while looking great. During your planning phase, you will encounter a variety of cheap, tempting materials, but it’s important to know which materials to avoid to prevent premature replacement and damage in the long run.
At Desirable Kitchens and Refacing, we’ve put together the top materials to avoid when renovating your kitchen.

Avoid These Materials in the Kitchen

Formica

The popular and affordable material is not particularly durable and will quickly wear down with regular use. It does not look as aesthetically pleasing over time as other materials can. An alternative you could consider using instead of Formica is engineered quartz or granite countertops, both of which have a longer lifespan than laminate countertops while also remaining cost-effective.

Vinyl Flooring

It is a cost-effective material but also prone to fading and staining with regular wear and tear. It’s not the most durable material either, so you might find yourself replacing it sooner than you would like. Consider installing hardwood or tile instead for a more long-term kitchen flooring option.

Particleboard

This material is vulnerable to water damage and will not last long if exposed to moisture regularly. Instead of particleboard for cabinets or other items in the kitchen, use plywood – it’s more durable and less likely to rot with exposure to moisture over time.

Plastic Laminate Cabinets

Plastic laminate cabinets may be attractive and affordable, but they will not stand the test of time. Instead of plastic laminate cabinets, consider investing in hardwood or metal options for a more durable, aesthetically pleasing option.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper may seem like an easy way to spruce up your kitchen space. However, it can easily get stained and damaged with regular exposure to cooking messes and frequent cleaning. Consider installing tile or textured paint on the walls for a more durable option.

Flat Paint

Flat paint may be easy to apply. However, it is easily scuffed and scratched with regular use. Instead of flat paint, consider using semi-gloss or high-gloss paint, which will have a longer lifespan and look better over time.

Contemporary Backsplash Materials

While they may be trendy, glass or metal tiles can become outdated and are often more expensive to install. Consider using classic subway tiles for a more timeless option that will not age as quickly. These are often cheaper and hold up to changing trends.

Overall, it is important to remember that when it comes to your kitchen renovation, quality materials should be prioritized over cost-effectiveness. Investing in quality materials can ensure that your kitchen stands the test of time and that it will remain an aesthetically pleasing space for years to come.

For the best results, research different materials and their lifespan before making any decisions!

Switch To These Cabinet Door Types During Refacing

When it comes to revamping your kitchen, cabinet refacing is one of the most popular options. Refacing cabinets can be a great way to give your kitchen a fresh new look without replacing the existing cabinetry. When refacing your cabinets, you will replace the old cabinet doors and drawer fronts for a new look! The face frames of the cabinets will also be refaced with wood veneers or other finishing methods for a cohesive look.

Types of Cabinet Doors to Choose From

One way to take your cabinet refacing project up a notch is by switching out the cabinet doors for something more modern and stylish. If you are considering refacing your kitchen cabinets in Pittsburgh, here are some of the different types of cabinet doors that you can choose from.

Options Available for Cabinet Door Functionality

Partial Overlay Cabinet Doors: Partial overlay cabinet doors are a popular choice when it comes to refacing your kitchen cabinets. This type of door is mounted directly onto the face frame and has only a small gap between each one.
Full Overlay Cabinet Doors: Like partial overlay doors, full overlay cabinet doors cover most of the face frame. This provides an uninterrupted look across all of your kitchen cabinetry.
Inset Cabinet Doors: Inset cabinet doors are set inside the face frames for a more traditional style that’s perfect for older homes and certain design aesthetics. This type of door fits within the cabinet frame, closing similarly to your front door.

Cabinet Styles to Choose from When Refacing

Once you’ve decided on the inset, partial, or full overlay, you need to choose a cabinet style:
Shaker Style: Shaker-style cabinet doors have a flat center panel surrounded by a wide frame. This cabinet door type is versatile enough to fit any kitchen design, from modern to traditional.
Raised Panel: Raised panel cabinet doors have a raised central panel that’s framed on all sides for a classic look. These doors are great for creating an elegant and luxurious feel in the kitchen.
Beadboard: Beadboard cabinets add charm and character to any kitchen space. This type of door is made with vertical boards that overlap each other in alternating directions, lending it its iconic style.
Open Frame: Open frame cabinet doors are great for creating an airy, open look in your kitchen. This style features slatted or latticed frames with no central panel, perfect for modern and contemporary kitchens.
Slab: Slab cabinet doors are a great choice when it comes to contemporary design. These doors feature a single, smooth panel with sleek lines and no frame or raised panels.
Arch/Cathedral: Arch or cathedral cabinet doors lend instant character to the kitchen. These doors feature an elegantly curved top panel with either a flat or raised bottom panel, creating a statement in any space.

How do I Know if My Cabinets Can be Refaced?

Now that you know the different types of cabinet doors and styles to choose from, it’s important to determine if your existing cabinets can even be refaced. To do so, simply measure the depth of your existing cabinetry and check whether they have a solid wood face frame. If they meet these criteria, then they can likely be refaced.
It’s also important to consider any design changes you plan on making when replacing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. If you plan on changing the style or size of your drawers, for example, this may require additional modifications, such as modifying the width or height of the face frames. It’s best to consult a professional kitchen remodeling contractor in Pittsburgh for help determining the best options for your space.

Latest Kitchen Trends According to Design Professionals for 2023

The kitchen is often considered the heart of a home, where families come together to cook, eat, and bond. As such, it’s no surprise that design trends are constantly evolving to meet the needs and aesthetic preferences of homeowners. If you plan to remodel your Pittsburgh, PA, kitchen in 2023, here are some of the latest trends you should consider.

Kitchen Trends for 2023

Multi-Level Kitchen Islands: One of the most popular kitchen design trends for 2023 is multi-level kitchen islands, which offer more storage and counter space than traditional one-level islands. This design also allows for an open-concept feel while still providing ample seating and storage space.

Minimize Upper Cabinets: Kitchen design professionals are also embracing the idea of minimizing upper cabinets. This creates a more open, airy feel and allows for natural light to flow through the kitchen. While this may require some rearrangement of items that were traditionally stored in upper cabinetry, it can make your space look larger and brighter than ever before.

Butcher Block Islands: Butcher block islands are another popular trend for 2023 kitchen remodels. Not only do they add a rustic yet modern look to the space, but they also provide an ideal spot for food preparation.

Bright Colors Mixed with Different Woods: A great way to make your kitchen stand out in 2023 is by incorporating bright colors into your design, like a pop of yellow or blue. This can be done with different woods, too. For example, pairing white cabinetry with a darker wood countertop or island creates an exciting contrast.

Textured Countertops: Textured countertops are also becoming more popular, with homeowners looking to add texture and depth to their kitchens. Examples include concrete, quartzite, soapstone, marble, and granite countertops that offer a unique look and feel.

Smart Appliances: Smart appliances are becoming increasingly common in modern home design. These connected devices allow for greater control, convenience, and efficiency in the home kitchen. Smart refrigerators can even help you keep track of expiration dates, so you never have to worry about throwing away expired food again!

Integrated Lighting: Another trend is integrated lighting, which allows homeowners to customize their kitchen’s lighting based on need or occasion. This type of lighting setup is excellent for those who often host dinner parties or other events.

These are just a few of the latest kitchen trends to consider when remodeling your kitchen in 2023. By incorporating these design details into your project, you can create a stunning and functional kitchen that will serve as the heart of your home for years to come!

How To Get Rid of Water Marks on Kitchen Cabinets

If you’ve noticed water marks on your wooden kitchen cabinets, don’t despair — they can be removed easily and quickly with common household items. Here’s how to do it:

Use a Paste Wax

This is a quick and simple fix for most cabinet types. Using a paste wax and a clean cloth, apply the wax to the watermarks as directed and polish the surface until it shines. Be sure to use furniture-quality paste wax such as Minwax 785004444 Paste Finishing Wax, Renaissance Wax Polish, or Natural Unscented Beeswax.

Make Your Own Water Stain Remover

A strange but effective combination is to use regular mayonnaise and wood ash. This mixture can be massaged over the watermarks and left on for one or two hours. After that, wipe it away until it is cleaned and polished.

More stubborn marks may require you to heat the area with a blow dryer while rubbing the mixture on the stain. Non-gel toothpaste is another option. Use a toothbrush to apply the paste and gently rub the area to loosen the stain, wiping it clean.

Denatured Alcohol and Cotton for Stubborn MArks

If the marks have faded, but still stand out, consider using denatured alcohol. This solution is for cabinets that do not have a shellac finish. With a 100% cotton cloth, quickly wipe the stain with denatured alcohol.

This must be done carefully and only using a dampened cloth. Your strokes should be done against the wood grain and when you are finished, buff the area with a wax polish.

Those are some of the methods you can use to get water damage off of your kitchen cabinets. If you have scratches you want to fix on your kitchen cabinets, we have solutions for that as well!

Can’t Remove The Water Marks? Consider Cabinet Refacing

If the watermarks are still noticeable after all of your efforts, consider having them professionally refaced. This will help to restore the cabinets’ original appearance and make sure there are no lingering stains from water or other liquids. Refacing your kitchen cabinets will also give you a chance to upgrade features like hardware, doors, and drawers, which can add to the overall look and feel of your kitchen.

During the refacing process, we will first remove and haul away the old cabinet pieces, such as the doors, drawer fronts, trim, etc. As long as your cabinets are structurally sound, we will sand the frames, sides, and any exposed surfaces to prepare them for refacing.

Once they have been sanded, we will install the new cabinet components, free of stains and watermarks. These components include custom doors and drawer fronts, new hinges, new hardware, and new matching trim, valances, etc.
